The village was quiet, the streets empty. Lieutenant Jack O'Reilly led his squad through the ruins, searching for any sign of the enemy. The war had moved on, but the ghosts remained.

Then they heard it-a drum, soft and steady, echoing through the streets.

"What is that?" Private Miller whispered.

Jack followed the sound, his rifle ready, his heart pounding. The drum led them to the church, its doors open, its altar bare.

A boy sat in the front pew, his hands on a drum, his eyes closed. He was young-maybe twelve-dressed in a uniform from another war.

"Who are you?" Jack asked.

The boy opened his eyes. "I'm the drummer. I lead the way."

"Lead the way where?"

The boy pointed to the door, which now glowed with pale light. "Home. For those who are lost."

Jack looked at the light, at the boy, at the soldiers who had never made it home.

"Can you help us?"

The boy nodded. "Follow the drum."

He played, and the sound echoed through the village, through the forest, through the war. Jack followed, his squad behind him, the drum guiding them.

They walked through the night, the drum growing louder, the light growing brighter.

At dawn, they reached the American lines.

The drum stopped. The boy was gone.

Jack stood at the edge of the camp, his squad around him, the war still waiting.

"What happened?" Miller asked.

Jack looked at the sky, at the past, at the boy who had led them home.

"I don't know," he said. "But we're here."

He never forgot the drummer boy, or the sound of the drum.

And he never stopped believing that sometimes, the smallest voices lead the way.
